Children need special protection

The skin of babies and children is extremely sensitive: It is not used to the sun and needs robust and effective protection that is also gentle on the skin. The stratum corneum, or outermost epidermis layer, is not yet fully developed in infants and toddlers. That is why you should always make sure that children are never exposed to intense sunlight even when they are wearing sunscreen. Use sunscreen even when in the shade.



The right protection is important: Children should always wear a hat, clothing, and sunglasses in the sun. Hats and clothing made out of densely woven material are the best. The easiest way is to remember the rule: Hat, Shirt, Pants, High SPF (Figure 1).



Since children love to play outside on sunny days and because their skin is sensitive, it is better to choose a higher sun protection factor (SPF) rather than one that is too low.
